New Medical Treatments Lets You Freeze Extra Fat and Tighten Your Skin

Barbara Knuth, a schoolteacher, is like a lot of women over 40.

“I’ve always been thin. I’ve never had a problem with my weight. And then, all of a sudden, this belly fat started to appear. I walk, I jog, I go to a gym but no matter what I did, this would not go away,” Knuth said.
Knuth is also part of a growing movement of women eager to avoid cosmetic surgery.
“I don’t want to go under the knife and [get] anesthesia,” she said.
Instead, Knuth is getting a new treatment that’s simple and pain free — freezing her fat away.

Dr Brodsky was not born with a dimple. At the age of six, she injured her left cheek in an accident and treated it with ice compresses for several hours. Within days, her cheek turned into a solid firm mass. Six to eight weeks later, the injury resulted in a pronounced dimple. For years she thought this to be the result of her injury until she studied Dermatology and found it to be the result of Cold Panniculitis. Cold Panniculitis is also referred to as Popsicle Panniculitis. It is well known in the literature that excessive exposure to cold from popsicles can result in dimpling of the cheeks. While this story may cause only a small amount of fear for parents who have children sucking popsicles, this is the primes behind ZELTIQ™’s newly FDA approved CoolSculpting™ Machine.

While this story may only cause a small amount of alarm for parents fearful of their children’s cheeks, this is now useful information for those seeking to remove fat from their bodies with a newly, recognized cold temperature therapy. This “Fat Freezing” method has become the basis for a modern form of fat removal known as CoolSculpting™ (also referred to as CoolSculpting™ by ZELTIQ™).

The CoolSculpting™ Machine freezes fat in a non-invasive manner between two cooling plates. Over time your body will naturally eliminate the broken fat cells as waste products.
The safe and effective process targets only fat cells while maintaining the skin’s integrity. ZELTIQ™ technology has found a way to attack fat cells at low temperatures, causing them to rupture, and eliminate them through natural metabolic processes.

Below is a quote from The Dr OZ Show concerning the newly approved CoolSculpting™ by ZELTIQ™ treatment:

“Dr Oz said that there is a new lunch time procedure that can be done to literally freeze away your fat, as an alternative to liposuction. CoolSculpting was recently approved by the FDA and was discovered by noticing that children who ate a lot of popsicles growing up got dimples, because the cold fights off the fat cells in your cheeks… this is called Popsicle Panniculitis. Dr Matthew Avram helped to create CoolSculpting and said that it does not involve anesthesia and there is no downtime, so you do not have to take a week off from work, from social activities or from your families. CoolSculpting by Zeltiq is quite different than Liposuction, because this procedure takes advantage of the fact that fat cells react to cold temperatures. Coldness is like sending a death signal to your fat cells, so the fat dies in 2-3 months and you can get a 22-23% reduction in the amount of fat after just one treatment. Dr Ozexplained that when you freeze fat, you kill your fat cells, and then your immune system can come and pick up and take away the dead fat cells. Therefore, over time, the procedure shrinks the fat cells that you see.
Dr Oz brought Dr Elizabeth Tanzi on his show because she is licensed to do the CoolSculpting by ZELTIQ procedure in New York. First, she applied a gel to the fat area to make sure there would be good contact between the skin and the hand piece machine that creates cold temperatures. Then, she applied the hand piece to the fat area and the skin gets sucked inside and is exposed to cold temperatures. You can feel the cold for a few minutes, but then the skin becomes numb. One session takes around 60 minutes and costs about $750. It takes around 2-4 months to see full results, which can be as much as 1-2 inches off of your waistline. Dr Oz pointed out that this is not a replacement for a healthy diet and exercise, but it is a good way to get rid of the last little bit of fat that you struggle with.”

CoolSculpting™ by ZELTIQ™ is a new, non-invasive way reduce fat in targeted areas of the body. The Zeltiq® Coolsculpting procedure differs from traditional liposuction, SmartLipo in that it is non-invasive (no needles, surgical incisions, anesthesia or recovery time) and unlike Zerona, it uses “advanced cooling technology” instead of a laser to selectively target and reduce unwanted abdominal fat, love handles (flanks), and back fat.

Non-Invasive ‘Cold’ Technology

The Coolsculpting procedure works using a precisely controlled cooling method called Cryolipolysis™ to target, cool, and eliminate fat cells without damage to other tissue. During the one to three hour procedure, a non-invasive applicator is applied to the skin surface where it gently draws the fat bulge up between two cooling panels. As treatment begins, the patient feels a sensation of intense cold which reportedly dissipates after a short time. The CoolSculpting procedure is also comfortable for most patients, who read, listen to music, use a laptop or simply relax during treatment. Without a recovery time, patients can typically resume their routine activities, including returning to work and exercise regimens on the same day as the procedure.

Fat cells that are targeted by the intense cooling begin a process called “apoptosis” where the fat cells shrink. This damages the fat cells without harming the surrounding tissues. The crystallized fat cells are then naturally removed by the body’s normal processes over the course of roughly two to four months.

The Cool Way to Reduce Fat™

The CoolSculpting™ procedure* is performed in a doctor’s office, typically under the supervision of a dermatologist or plastic surgeon and is reported to be effective for gently and effectively treating localized areas of fat. The Coolsculpting procedure cannot remove extreemly large amounts of fat and patience is required, as it does take time to see noticeable, natural-looking fat reduction. results.

Skin Care Tips for Dry Fall Skin

It happens every year: summer winds down and the cool weather slowly makes its way in. As hard as it can be to pack away those shorts and summer dresses, it feels good to drag out the sweaters and the jeans.

Don’t forget though, just because your jeans and sweaters cover your skin doesn’t mean that you can take a break on your skin regimen. Proper care can mean the difference between healthy skin and dry flaky skin.

Smart Skin Move #1: Exfoliate

Summer spent in the sun can make your skin appear dull. Exfoliation can remove the dull outer layer of skin, and unclog pores. Exfoliate a couple times a week with an exfoliating cleanser or with Clarisonic. Another exfoliation option: Microdermabrasion or chemical peels, done with Bari our aesthetician. These procedures are more effective and quicker at removing the superficial dead layer of the skin.

Smart Skin Move #2: Switch cleansers

Your skin was probably oilier than usual in the summer, due to heat and humidity, so a deeper-cleansing face wash was in order. But come fall, when the heat begins to disappear, you need a gentler cleanser. Look for a non-soap product, which removes dirt and impurities but doesn’t strip your skin’s natural oils. Try a toner if you tend to be oily in the T-zone area after you cleanse.

Smart Skin Move #3: Add moisturizer

Whether you used only your sunscreen or skipped moisturizer altogether in the summer, you’ll need to add this product back into your routine in the fall. Choose a basic moisturizer which contains potent anti oxidants and rich emollients to protect, moisturize and soothe dry, tender skin. These ingredients neutralize the damaging toxins from the sun, and can help prevent further damage. Even during the fall/winter days, continue to apply sunscreen as your everyday moisturizer.

Smart Skin Move #4: Try eye cream

Older skin is prone to showing fine lines and a crepey texture around the eyes. And sun exposure exacerbates these problems. An eye treatment can help smooth the eye area again. Look for a product containing hyaluronic acid, an ingredient that effectively holds moisture onto the skin.

Smart Skin Move #5: Combat brown spots

Post-summer, you may notice more dark spots on your face. These spots are signs of sun damage-plus, they make you look older. To help remove them, try a bleaching cream containing the ingredient hydroquinone. Bleaching creams work by slowing the production of pigment deep in the skin; they usually take a minimum of six weeks to work. While there are several bleaching creams available over the counter, you’ll have better effects with a prescription cream. That’s because OTC bleaching products contain very small (read: generally ineffective) percentages of their active ingredients.

Smart Skin Move #6: Get a skin check-up

With over 50,000 new cases of melanoma, the deadliest skin cancer, diagnosed each year, fall is the perfect time to schedule a skin check with Dr. Brodsky. This is especially crucial if you spent your summer in the sun, as moles can change and become abnormal quickly. Dr. Brodsky can thoroughly examine your skin, looking for abnormalities and suspicious moles, so you can clear up any possible problems before they become serious.

Schedule an appointment for a skin evaluation and Dr. Brodsky will customize a skin care regimen that is right for you! Check out our products http://chicagodermatologist.net/products/
